Can art give back more than it takes?

This October, PS122 Gallery presents ADDED VALUES + / a generous landscape, an exhibition by the29.art, an intergenerational collective of women artists working across painting, photography, sculpture, film, performance, installation, and immersive media. The exhibition proposes that artistic practice can be an act of regeneration—for communities, for culture, and for the environment.

ADDED VALUES foregrounds practices that transform materials, spaces, and systems – where creative interventions become additive rather than extractive and invites viewers to consider how art can contribute to collective well-being, ecological balance, and new social imaginaries.

Featured works include:

Liz Canner’s The Lost City of Mer, an underwater civilization resurfaces through newly discovered art/ifacts and interactive VR, prompting viewers to reevaluate their own relationship to the ocean and engage in a de-extinction project.

Stefani Mar's Urban Rubble Garden, transformed a vacant city lot into a zen garden using elements of the building that once stood there.

Susan Salinger’s Herm 5 and Herm 6, guardians of Lower Manhattan, are part of an ongoing sculpture series in clay of reimagined ancient Greco-Roman herms as guardians in female form.

Kathy Brew’s Following the Thread photo series presents ancestral weaving practices in Cusco that become a metaphor for continuity and resistance.

Aline Mare’s The Hole at Glendale Narrows, becomes a meditation on the terrible beauty of environmental collapse.

Martha Edelheit’s Slaughtered USA, bears witness to violence.

Performances by Yoshiko Chuma, jennifer jazz, Phoebe Legere, Felice Rosser, Yohanna M. Roa, Susan Salinger, and Lila Zemborain.

The exhibit will illuminate the delicate balance between consumption and contribution, urging a shift from mere sustainability to additive practices. These artists do not extract from the environment but offer something back: attention, empathy, and the possibility of restoration. Together, their works imagine an “additive” ecology, where the act of making art becomes an act of giving back to the world rather than taking from it, cultivating a new narrative where generosity is rebellion and care is revolution.
