KP BOWENS-SAFFO
PRINT MAKER and GRAPHIC ARTIST
Kabuya Pamela Bowens-Saffo is a Florida based artist specializing in printmaking, graphics, and mixed media. Her work explores aspects of everyday social and political human relations highlighting important references to acknowledge a progressive history of African Americans. Bowen-Saffo’s interest in narrative content employs metaphor and visual iconography as a means to examine people, place, and purpose.
“ABOUT Face” is a new body of work concerning race, identity, mental-health and economic crisis.
The installation of the “Wheel Series “ at Munree Cemetery consists of 30 wheels in the making. The cemetery is an historical landmark of African American burials (some date former slaves) recovered during highway road construction.
The artwork titled “Sacred Bird” is a funeral of symbolic rituals that acknowledge the deaths and killings of black men and boys by police forces. The film “To Kill A Mockingbird” and the musician Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker are an inspiration and motivation for this work. The mockingbird is a symbol of innocence and many people think it’s sinful to kill or harm it. It is also resilient, singing the unrelenting chants of mocking sounds.
“Tracks & Bridges”, a series of drawings on paper and mixed media collage assemblages, features the image The Harp , created by sculptor Augusta Savage. Bowens-Saffo considers Savage's work and the work of the Harlem Renaissance writer James Weldon Johnson as an inspiration and influence for this series.
